Cosmetics Splurge

February 11th, 2012

shoppers drug mart flyerIf you collect Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum points, you can redeem them for extra value on skin care products and cosmetics today through Monday (Feb 11 to 13).  It’s one of the bonus weekends, but this time you can’t stock up on dog treats and frozen pizzas, just skin, hair and nail products, fragrances and hosiery.  That’s good enough.

not tested on animals bunny symbolThey can add up quickly so getting your $90 worth for 40,000 points or $200 worth for 80,000 points shouldn’t be that hard.  If you want to buy ethically and keep your animal treatment karma in good condition even in the possible craziness of bonus days, here are some brands to zero in on.  These are all products I have bought from Shoppers.  All are not tested on animals.

Revlon hair colourFor a big-name brand with a full range of makeup, Revlon.  Priced pretty much the same as L’Oreal, Maybelline and others that are tested on animals.  I’ve switched to Revlon and I like all the products I have tried.

On Revlon’s website, I found they make this hair colour.  I will be looking for it and asking Shoppers if they plan to stock it.

St. Ives – lotions, facial cleansers and scrubs, body wash and other products.  All marked not tested on animals.

physicians formula correcting powderPhysicians Formula has really pretty pressed powders and blushes.  I like the patterns in them.  I also like how the products work.  They have great corrective base sticks and powders like this multi-coloured compact.

For shampoo and conditioner, I like the Yes to Carrots line of hair and skin products.  Yes to Cucumbers is yes to baby carrots productsfor coloured hair.  Yes to Blueberries is what they call their “age refresh” products of moisturizers and cleansers.  They even have a line of baby products rabbits with damaged eyesso you don’t have to say to your child “I let them do this to Mr. Bunny for your shampoo”.

Smashbox foundation brushSmashbox is another cosmetic line that is cruelty-free.  Very nice feeling skin primers for under your makeup and great eyeliner pencils.  Their real hair cosmetic brushes are also guaranteed cruelty-free, the hairs being combed from the animals rather than the quicker way of retrieving an animal’s fur coat.

burts bees facial creamsBurt’s Bees,  with an ever-expanding range of lip and skin care products, is also all natural and not animal-tested.

So there you go, remember your points card and have a fun shopping spree.
